Dream Hunt at Clay Road Farms in Moore County

November’s Dream hunt for 4 amazing hunters put on by Hands Of A Sportsman and the Clay Road Farms Hunting Club was a great success. These hunters experienced the most important thing about the outdoors; Fellowship, the woods and every hunt is a successful hunt.  For these families it’s an opportunity to spend time together in the woods with some normalcy in their lives.  No deer took a truck ride this rainy Saturday but I believe all the hunters, guides and volunteers left with a smile on their face and a story to tell.

Inspire. Motivate. Overcome.

Disabled Hunt in Virginia

In 2009 Matt Pope went to enjoy a day of hunting like every other with one exception: he chose a built stand that was old. The stand collapsed underneath Matt sending him to the ground. A log broke his back leaving him in a wheelchair, unable to do what he once loved to do, hunt. One day his good friend, Brandon Killian, was able to talk Matt into getting back into the woods again. So with the help of the HOAS Board members voting to purchase Matt’s VA hunting license; Guy Mundy, Brandon and Matt took a road trip to beautiful Virginia. After 11 long years since his accident, Matt harvested his first doe!!!!

Jessica Starnes

This is what it’s all about! Not the killing of a deer but the fun, laughter, fellowship and memories being made of who you out there with! The ones who care to give up their time to help others when they don’t have to! Just because your life has to be lived in a wheelchair the last seventeen years doesn’t mean you can’t do things others do! You can do anything you set your mind to!! Nobody knows how you feel and who really cares!! Live your life and do what you want to do!! Not too many people understand it anyways!! Keep smiling!! ~Jessica’s mom, Donna

Hunt With Lloyd Rigdon

Many people think hunting is about killing. Not so says Lloyd Rigdon. It’s about witnessing the day wake up and the enjoying the natural painting of the landscape created by God's hands. Simple things like sitting in a blind with people that normally don't get to do the same as the rest of us, or at least at the same level of leisure that most of us do.

The first weekend in November, Lloyd Rigdon and his son Coty took Jessica Starnes on a disabled hunt.  Whether they harvested a deer that weekend or not wasn’t important, but if the Lord granted such a blessing, well that would simply be icing on the cake.

After a hard long weekend of hunting and trying to help Jessica get her first buck, they thought they were getting skunked. It had gotten to where they were just hoping to see a deer in this last couple of hours of the hunt. When suddenly Jessica’s dad, Dale said, “there’s a buck!” Lloyd stated, “I had just asked the lord to bless us with this bonus to closeout our weekend. God is real and he listens, he gives you what you need, not what you want. Jessica needed a chance at this buck, the lord giveth!”

Jessica aimed and down he went. She got a 3 point buck! Her first Buck along with the first time Muzzleloading!

Hunt with Barrett Eatman

Jessica had another great weekend of hunting with HOAS board member, Barrett Eatman. WhenJessica and her family arrived in Albemarle, Barrett and his wife met up with them to tour “Christmas Downtown” in Albemarle.

Saturday morning they drove to southern Stanly County to hunt on property that is leased by a club where Barrett is member. Since Jessica is confined to a wheelchair, Barrett constructed an elevated box stand with a ramp to accommodate her. After seeing several does, small bucks and a few small piglets, Jessica decided she would pass for an opportunity at a mature buck.

No matter the outcome, it was the fun and fellowship that counted! Watching the sun come up from the stand was amazing seeing God’s beauty unfold in front of us. While Jessica didn’t harvest a deer that day, the time spent in the woods with her family, and mentor, was priceless!

Wheelin’ Sportsman Hunt Saw Tooth Oak Farm

This December 7th and 8th  will be the 12th annual Wheelin Sportsman Hunt hosted at Sawtooth Oak Farms and  the Barringer Family.  This hunt started very small, only 8 hunters, but now it hosts close to 60 disabled hunters of varying ages with a wide range of disabilities. Amazing growth like that only occurs when good things are happening!!  The Barringer family started this hunt as a way to remember one of their own, Brent Barringer and his love of hunting that he never lost even as it got harder and harder for him to get to the woods. The mission is to give a bit of the wonderful outdoors to those that aren’t able to enjoy it all that often. This hunt is possible only because of the support of family, sponsors, landowners, guides, and volunteers.  The Barringer family is grateful to the awesome backing needed to make the Wheelin Sportsman Sawtooth Oak Farms Hunt become reality.  This absolutely, fantastic event allows guides, hunters, volunteers, families of all, and the community to come together for food, fun, fellowship, and to share the common trait, love of the outdoors. The Wheelin Sportsman allows dreams to come true and touches lives for not only the hunters, but of all involved. So please mark your calendars!!

Deep Woods Hunting Club

HOAS can’t thank Deep Woods Hunting Club enough for opening up their stands for these 8 deserving hunters on October 28. Its humbling to know there are good people that still love giving back, even for one weekend. As you can see, there's smiles on a lot of faces that would other wise been at home doing nothing. Thanks again from the Hands of a Sportsman family, you all have truly helped to "Inspire.Motivate.Overcome" everyone we hunt with!
